Uns Deutschen wird ja viel nachgesagt, und das Meiste davon kann ich eigentlich nicht unterschreiben. Aber eines scheint irgendwie tatsächlich “typisch deutsch” zu sein: Sich für sein nicht-perfektes Englisch zu schämen. Wie oft höre ich “Ich soll Englisch sprechen? Neeeee, das kann ich nicht!” Und es geht dabei selten um einen Vortrag. Schon wenn mal englischsprachiger Besuch da ist, leiden selbst die größten Laberbacken auf einmal an akuter Kiefersperre. Das ist doch verrückt! Besonders wenn man sich mal überlegt, vor wem man sich da eigentlich schämt: Gerade Amerikaner und Engländer sprechen oftmals gar keine Fremdsprache. Für was sollst du dich dann schämen?
Das völlig irre daran ist, dass wir uns umgekehrt wie ein Schneekönig freuen, wenn ein Ausländer dann doch mal 5 Wörter Deutsch spricht. Unser Freund Andres kann genau einen Satz auf Deutsch: “Ich liebe Früchte.” Jedes mal, wenn er diesen Satz loslässt, rasten alle aus vor Begeisterung. Aber selber Englisch sprechen: Nein!! Man könnte ja irgendwo einen grammatikalischen Fehler machen oder gar eine Vokabel vergessen oder jemand könnte den Akzent bemerken!
Es heißt ja nicht umsonst “learning by doing”. Mein Schulenglisch war auch sehr beschränkt; erst durch viele viele Gespräche und dem Hören von Vorträgen und Filme im O-Ton ansehen hat sich dies geändert. Niemand wird dich schief angucken, weil du eine Fremdsprache nicht fließend sprichst. Sich verständigen können, es aber nicht tun – dafür muss man sich schämen!!
